Bob Cunningham elected Treasurer of the Insurance Law Section of the State Bar of Texas

Bob Cunningham was elected as Treasurer of the Insurance Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, by unanimous vote of the Council at its meeting on April 9, 2020. Bob served on the 16-member Council for the last six years, and will begin his one-year term as Treasurer at the conclusion of the State Bar annual convention on June 26th. Historically the Council has elected its general Officers on a succession ladder in the order of Treasurer/Secretary/Chair-Elect/Chair, so in the ordinary course Bob’s election as Treasurer portends his progression to Chair of the Section in 2023.

In keeping with the Section’s policies and procedures for selecting its Treasurer, the Council takes into account that the same high standards and criteria for serving as Chair should also apply. The character of the officeholder in the Treasurer position is evaluated for his ability to further the primary purposes that prompted the formation of the Section and are reflected in the Section’s mission statement: Promoting collegiality and educating the bench, bar, and public about Texas insurance law.

During his tenure as a Council member, Bob organized and coordinated two regional seminars in the Rio Grande Valley addressing insurance coverage issues; served as chair of the sponsorship committee exceeding budgeted goals; assisted in developing content for the Section’s revamped website;, and ramrodded revisions to the Section bylaws and policies/procedures manual. He has served with many notable luminaries in the insurance coverage practice of Texas, including with judicial liaison members sitting on the trial and appellate bench and the Supreme Court of Texas. As a practicing Texas lawyer Bob has earned the highest AV “Preeminent” rating by Martindale-Hubble for decades, and is recognized for his insurance coverage expertise in Chambers USA (2006-current), by Best Lawyers in America (2008-current), and as a Texas SuperLawyer (2006-current).
